Unanswered, Does Not God Hear Me?

Unanswered, does your prayer remain,                                                                                                   Though oft with tears you plead?                                                                                                                 And watch and wait and wonder if                                                                                                           God does not care or heed?                                                                                                           Unanswered? Well, perhaps, dear heart,                                                                                                   You may have asked amiss;                                                                                                                            Is it God’s glory that you seek,                                                                                                                     Or selfish avarice?

And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.

Why is it that God does not give to us the very first time we ask Him, the things that we ask of Him?  The answer is plain: God would do more for us, and better for us than to merely give us that thing.  He would do us the far greater good of training us into persistent faith.  The things that we get by our other forms of effort than payer to God, do not always become  ours the first time we make an effort to get them; for our own good, God compels us to be persistent in our effort, and just so God does not always give us what we ask in prayer the first time we pray.  Just as He would train us to be strong men and women along the other lines of effort, so also He would train to be and make us to be strong men and women of prayer by compelling us to pray hard for the best things.  He compels us to “Pray through,”

It is good, I find, to persevere in attempts to pray,  If I cannot pray with perseverance or continue long in my addresses to the Divine Being, I have found that the more I do in secret prayer the more I have delight to do, and have enjoyed more of the spirit of prayer; and frequently I have found the contrary, when by journeying or otherwise, I have been deprived of retirement,.

If we are to be in the “Holy Spirit” when we pray, and praise Him ALWAYS, when we pray, and ALWAYS give HIM all the glory.  In doing so, then why are our prayers not granted?  Prayers must be activated by faith.  And remember you cannot say the Lord’s Prayer and ever once say “I”. It is not MY will but THINE. The Bible contains so many specific and explicit directions regarding prayer, as well as promises.

Do we have a critical spirit?  Do we sometimes feel the Holy Spirit is not with us or in church, when others’ feel His presence?  Ephesians 8:11 tells how He gifts His church.  And He gave some, Apostles, some Prophets, and some Evangelists, and some Pastors. One of the purpose of the “gifts” of the spirit is for the perfecting of the Saints, for the work of the Ministry, for edifying of the Body of Christ. Eph 4:12   vs. 14 That we henceforth be no more children tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.  Which is why a prophet has to be ordained by God, and through your church, elders and Pastors.  You cannot just blatantly yell something out disrupting a service, if it does not flow with the spirit of God.  Else false prophets can be allowed to blare out that which is not only a distraction to the service, not the real word of God and HIS will.   For what you tolerate you cannot change.  Proverbs 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his OWN eyes, but, the Lord weighs by the “spirit”!  Proverbs 27:2 Let another man praise you and not your own mouth, a stranger and not your own lips.  Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  Some are Satan’s greatest weapon’s.  Which is why a church has to have discipline during a service.

Vs 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits.  Wherefore if they harbor hates, are discontent, always finding fault, always, I, my , me… They are not of God but, self.

God is never unreasonable or irrational.  He is also never illogical.  And if God gave every individual every answer to every prayer that might pop into his head, the world would be filled almost immediately with anarchy, chaos, and confusion.  He also will never grant a prayer if it would hurt another person, or stir up more strife. It is HIS timetable not ours.  That is why too, as I have written on this blog, on enemies, we are always to pray for them, and pray blessings on them and forgive them.  Those things get us out of our hates, doldrums, and self.  Then it is lifted from us and the burden lies with the enemy.  Sounds simple, but, it’s hard, but it works.  And you’ll feel your spirit lighten.  In other words let go and let God.  How I’ve learned through the years…and sometimes, through a lot of reprimand. For I took correction.

You cannot say the Lord’s Prayer and ever one say “I”;

You cannot pray the Lord’s Prayer and ever once say “my”;

Nor can you pray the Lord’s Pray and not pray for one another,

For when you ask for daily bread you must include your brother;

For “others” are included in each and every plea,

From beginning to the end of it, it does not every once say”me.”

I cannot say, “our,” if I live in a watertight spiritual compartment; if I think a special place in         heaven is reserved for my denomination.

I cannot say, “Father,” if I do not demonstrate the relationship in my daily life.

I cannot say, “Which art in Heaven, “If I am so occupied with earth that I am not laying up treasure over there.

I cannot say, “Hallowed be thy name”, if I, who am called by His name, am not holy.

I cannot say, “Thy will be done,” if I am questioning, resentful, or disobedient to His will for me.

I cannot say, “Give us this day our daily bread,” if I am living on past experiences.

I cannot say, “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,” if I harbor a grudge against anyone.

I cannot say, “lead us not into temptation,” if I deliberately place myself or remain in a position where I am likely to be tempted.

I cannot say, “Deliver us from evil,” if I am not prepared to fight it in the spiritual realm with the weapon of prayer.

I cannot say, “Thine is the Kingdom,” if I don’t give the King the disciplined obedience of a loyal subject.

I cannot say, Thine is the…glory,,” If I am seeking glory for myself.

I cannot say, “Forever,” if my horizons are bond of things of time.

I cannot say, “Amen, “ if I do not also add, “Cost what it may,” for to say this prayer honestly…will cost everything,

The day slipped by and time was spent.                                                                                                     And all the good things that I meant                                                                                                         To do were let undone because                                                                                                                    I had no time to stop and pause,                                                                                                                  But rushed about, went here and there,                                                                                                  Did this and that, was everywhere. I had no time to kneel and pray.                                                    I had no time to meditate.                                                                                                                              On worthwhile things, no time to wait                                                                                                Upon the Lord and hear Him say;                                                                                                               “Well done, my child,” at close of day.                                                                                                       And so I wonder, after all,                                                                                                                     When life is o’er and I hear the call                                                                                                               To meet my Savior in the sky,                                                                                                                       Where saints live and never die,                                                                                                                  If I will find one soul I’ve won                                                                                                                       To Christ by some small deed I’ve done,                                                                                                 Or will I hang my had and whine,                                                                                                              “Forgive me, Lord, I had no time”?

—Mrs. Herbert Bell—

Oh, Father God, as I pray and seek your face,                                                                                    How wonderful thou art and how I yearn for you everlasting grace,                                                    We have so much to be thankful for in this great land of ours,                                                              And yet, we’re never satisfied, for our hunger is not yours,                                                              For you desire us to be longing  for your word,                                                                                    When the things of the world take our time and lure,                                                                            The false piety we need to rid, to come back to the Cross,                                                                    And seek your face in humility too, lest we stay forever lost.

—J E Worthen 2002—

***”Waiting” implies a time of conquering, controlling, disciplining the restless spirit, quieting ourselves, being silent with a holy, spiritual silence, and just being in His presence. “Be still and know that I am God,” is a quote from God to David found in Psalms 46:10  Stop, be quiet, wait in His presence and upon God, not mere daydreaming, but total concentration and quietness.” Ps 119:148

Race, Hate, Then And Now

First I cannot believe what has happened to my America..I am heartsick. I saw the video on Fox, and David Duke’s bunch was threatening too. He is as evil as any Commie on the left. So is the KKK. And I’ll tell you one thing,..all those Duke nationalists, wearing Crosses, on their backs? You think Hate gets you to Heaven? They are all going to hell.

I’m sick of all this race in America. Now David Duke is Tweeting Trump to defend him? Evil is evil Hate is hate whether its ISIS, David Duke and the KKK, or Maxine Waters, sharpton, and the Black left caucus, or the Black Panthers packing; PERIOD! I have a Black Grandson, and I love my him at 24. I have Black friends, on here; and at church. I’m sick of this in my America.

God help America with all that is going on.  All this hate, Lord, help us all in America HEAL.  60 years I’ve seen hate. At 18 right on the steps of West High School before I graduated.  One of our graduate Black students came back to school on leave in his Air Force uniform, to visit the football coaches.  I was going down the stairs, and I said , “Hi, how are you..” And some little short twit of a freshman called me a “N—–” lover. I was 18..shy, not outspoken as now.  I don’t think I ever told anyone, even my mother. But, I’ll tell you one thing, at 78 years old, I will NEVER forget the look that came over his face and I hope he made it to Heaven.  Such discrimination in the Services then too. Now? It is WORSE than back then.  We have as Trump says, groups on BOTH SIDES.   The Soros side and Obama side is becoming violent.

It is NOT THE ANSWER.  In the 60’s married with 3 babies, I watched JFK, the debates with Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley, Jr…(All on YouTube)…I voted for Kennedy then. He was pro life , a catholic, and other than his womanizing, was a good man. I would have marched with Dr. king.  Yes, I was political back then too, learning..Now, the democratic party doesn’t stand for anything, except tearing this country apart.  GOD HEAR OUR PRAYERS AND HELP THIS PRESIDENT HEAL THIS COUNTRY.  “IF MY PEOPLE”…WELL, YOUR PEOPLE ARE CRYING OUT. SAW ON FB my unsaved Black grandson, now is playing around with Black Lives Matter.  God, I come against this, in Jesus name.  He needs salvation, not Soros’ Commie group.  THINE Will be done, with John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Al Sharpton, and the rest of the Black caucus in Washington.  Help them see the TRUTH. And let me tell the media something too, all your screaming to be heard, interrupting others is NOT having a debate. A proper real intellectual debate was like Vidal and Buckly, Jr. They had intellect and could put someone down with words the other person didn’t even know the definition of.

60 years and all you hear from the Black Caucus is race race race. Then I shared the piece on White slaves from Britain, Ireland, and Scotland brought here way before Black slaves. Yes we are ALL children of God. My God is a God of love. This is not my America. Lord heal this nation in Jesus name. Let us show love, mercy, and grace. GOD BLESS AMERICA. MELT OUR HEARTS LORD. As the President said, “We all bleed the same color blood.”

I think back to my younger years, in my early teens when I discovered Ella.  Lord, God, I pray my Ella Fitzgerald is singing away in Heaven, and made it.  How I loved that lady, and had the privilege of seeing her perform 7 times.  The last time at the Americana in NYC. In 1973, I saw Duke Ellington, at a small dinner place, now closed in NH.  He died some 4 years later.  He came over at intermission and kissed my right hand as a gentleman. The chords he played, his arrangements.  He was a genius in jazz. I fell in love with all these jazz singers and musicians at only 13, and ended 8 years of classical piano.  I never saw color.  I only heard “sound!”  I don’t to this day understand all this hate. I listened as a young girl to Billie Holliday singing “Strange Fruit”, “Black men hanging on a poplar tree, strange fruit”..and all the pain resonating from her voice.  In my early teens I knew.

Al Sharpton, Obama, Jesse Jackson, John Conyers, and all the Black caucus in Washington. Are you happy?  For 8 years, I saw all your hatred of us White people.  Even Obama, in your own words from your own book, talking about your grandmother. You mocked us, belittled us, made your sarcastic remarks, threw everything, in our faces including your loathing of Christianity.  You jammed Communism down our throats, God, you even sent the Statue of Winston Churchill back to Britain.  But little did you know, (or ignored) that in all your bowing to Arab leaders who never respected you, all your taking of Soros money for your left organizations, that there was in fact White slavery here in America way before any Black slavery.  You never wanted known?  To what end? Obliterate history, all the wrongs, pull down the statutes and change history. You want Black rule instead of being equal.  To what end?   White Supremacy, or Black Supremacy, what is the difference in race hate?  Someone ALWAYS will get hurt.

White Cargo, White Slaves in America, before Black:

You never preached love, not once, until this week after Charlotte, VA. Do you not bear any responsibility?  In your 8 years of Presidency, Chicago got worse, more murders thanks to your friend Rahm Emanuel, Mayor do nothing. All the hate, all the blame game.  Well, guess what? We the people who voted for this President you hate, are fighting back.  We see and know the truths of all your community organizing.  God once young, that sounded good. But, we are not nor ever will be a Communist nation. We get it.  And if our Republicans don’t step up to the plate and back President Trump, we will make darn sure they are voted out for someone who will get something done.

And your friend and Hillary’s George Soros, is to me the most evil man in all of history.  A Jew who is Godless, a Communist, who helped Hitler and Nazi party kill other Jews? Tell me Obama how low does one have to stoop?  (Real name Schwartz).  I know one thing. One day, he will stand on that Great White Judgment Seat of God Almighty, as you all.  And be judged, and cast into the pit of hell for ever and ever.  THAT is a consolation.  God loves us all who are sinners, but this man long crossed over the line, and like Esau in the Bible, who was the only one God said, HIM do I hate in the whole Bible, I know that I know that I know, God hates this man Soros.  So you see, one day soon, he will meet his match.  God help all of you. And THAT is your legacy!

Ku Klux Klan. Neo Nazi’s, White Nationalists, Racist Skinheads, New Confederate, Black Separatist, Anti-LGBT, Anti-Muslim, General hates..

Then you have all the all the left groups mostly paid by Soros. Center for American Progress, Media-access for 527’s, Media Fund, Media matters, (all our cable fake news), CREW digging up dirt, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington &Ethics…(You have to be kidding). Hollywood Organizations, American Votes…ie concerts, media.  Vast Funding, along with Soros’ Open Society and Democracy Alliance.  Social Tech. Movement, Move All Communist –Socialists.  Want a One World Order, want UN control, and no more Constitution. In other words out to destroy America and every darned thing we stood for including FREEDOM!

And if “that” wasn’t bad enough, look at who these top exec’s are married to on our “fake” left wing news stations.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one says it all!

A professor Benjamin Ginsberg, from John Hopkins, said this: “Civil Service rules have to be changed (to Progressives) they used and weakened parties to control elections, as civil service can destroy by not being able to fire.”

This is when the name calling and tagging take place.  Do you realize that Iceland now has eradicated Down Syndrom, through abortion?  I mean my God, that’s like Hitler did killing Jews. That’s what Margaret Sanger did, trying to eradicate the Black race, which is why all her planned Parenthood offices where in or near poor Black neighborhoods.  From a  Black preacher in New Jersey,  I had a friend Arlene I’d known for years.  How I admired her, She and her husband had 2 Down Syndrome girls.  Watched her like a general when she had A back sprain in bed. Bible , phone book…all next to her if she needed.  She loved her girls. And I thank God for Sarah Palin too.  It is murder.  I don’t care what you call it. God calls it murder. Are we God? Well, Hitler thought he was too, until he like a coward took a gun to his head before our troops moved in. Now…another group. And before I start, I’m a follower of Geert Wilders from the Netherlands.  And Germany never learned their lesson.  I’m German. part English.  How ashamed I was a child in the 40’s of being German. All because of a madman named Adolf Hitler. I got over it. And my maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Schneider, so Praise God, I might have Jewish royalty in my blood.  Jesus was a Jew!

Regarding Charlotte Va, here is an excerpt from Ben Stein from the American Spectator: Whose Side is He On?

Good for him for taking the hard way out and defending the constitution.

Now for a few words about the Confederate statues contretemps in various states.

  1. I wonder how many of the counter-protesters at the Charlottesville event even had any idea who Robert E. Lee was. He was a major hero of the Mexican-American War. He fought for the Confederacy against the Union, but at the time he did it, it was not illegal. Slavery was — while 100 percent evil — completely protected by law as of 1861. When Lee went to work to defend his native Virginia, he was not violating any law.

In fact, at no time did the Supreme Court rule that secession was unconstitutional. To the contrary, when the Supreme Court moved towards declaring secession lawful, President Lincoln, in violation of every lawful principle, threatened to have Roger Taney, the Chief Justice, arrested and jailed. He had already used federal troops to arrest much of the Maryland state legislature to keep Maryland from seceding. Again, this was an unequivocal violation of the Constitution. And when a court ordered the legislators released under habeas corpus, Lincoln simply ignored the order.

When the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox Court House in the spring of 1865, some officers of Lee’s Army suggested an ongoing guerrilla campaign against the Union. Lee absolutely vetoed the idea, saying that enough blood had been shed and that it was time to bind up the wounds of war.

This photo of Trump, when he was a Democrat..he’d won an award..he’s racist?

Now comes Islam…and I have so much on this blog on Islam, from the loins of Abraham and his handmaiden (slave) Hagar…Ishmael.  And from Ishmael up to Esau, and Mohamad.

Muslim Brotherhood In America

Muslim Brotherhood in America has reached penetration phase 3 (see Spread of Islam).

Like the Muslim Brotherhood in Europe and UK, the Muslim Brotherhood in America operates front groups among which its leaders, most of them US-educated, rotate to avoid detection, litigation and/or prosecution.

The first Muslim Brotherhood organization in America was the Muslim Students Association (MSA), founded in the early 1960s at the University of Illinois. MSA spread quickly across American college campus and spawned Muslim professional groups when their leaders graduated and entered professional life. The founders of most Muslim Brotherhood groups in America can be traced back to the MSA.

Other prominent Muslim Brotherhood groups in America include the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), whose chapters across America conduct the ground game, including by threatening or bringing lawsuits to towns, companies and individuals; the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), which is an umbrella political group through which the Muslim Brotherhood lobbies and influences American lawmakers and government agencies (see Islamization of America); the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), which is the funnel through which Saudi oil money is used to build mosques and Islamic schools across America; and the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA).

The most notorious Muslim Brotherhood front group in the United States was the Texas-based and deceptively-named Holy Land Foundation (HLF), formerly the largest Muslim charity in America. In late 2008, HLF and its officers were convicted of financing Hamasand sentenced for up to 65 years in prison.

The alphabet soup below is a partial list of the Muslim Brotherhood front organizations and affiliates in America. The major ones are in bold-face. Those on the prosecutor’s list ofunindicted co-conspirators of HLF to be prosecuted next are highlighted:

A good question.  How do we stop All the hate groups in America?  God help us. Here is an article by Billie Graham Association.  What do we as conservative Christians do?  PRAY…BUT STAY INVOLVED!   He said;  “If we ever needed guidance, if we ever needed stability, if we ever needed strength, if we ever needed faith, if we ever needed integrity, if we ever needed righteousness, if we ever needed a Heaven-sent revival, it is at the present hour.

We need a revival of Christian faith, of Christian experience, of God-consciousness. God has said, “If My people … seek My face” (2 Chronicles 7:14). If we will rediscover that He is holy, righteous, real, absolute and personal, and that He is a God of love and mercy, then this reality will be transferred to the world and revival can come.

The church holds the key. It is within our grasp. Will we rise to the challenge? Will we dare pay the price? The supply of Heaven is adequate for the demands of our spiritually starved world. Will we fail to offer that supply?”   God your people are crying out to you against all this hate.  Differences we can handle…but, hates?  I hope and pray everyone who reads this, learns, and understands we have to keep our history. THAT is how we learn never to repeat the same mistakes.  I pray for my President and that you Lord give him wisdom and strength, for what lies ahead.  He did not CAUSE this in office for only 6 mos.  He inherited this mess.  YOU Lord chose this man to serve you and lead us.  I bind you Satan out of our White House, with all your imps, minions, and evil doers be bound in the name of Jesus by the blood on the CROSS.  Be gone out of our American policies, and out of our House, Senate, and White House.  Lord God RAISE your President up to do things YOUR way giving YOU the glory Lord, in every deed.   Wake those in the House and Senate up, whether Democrat or Republican.  I glory in your presence Lord, for I am nothing only your vessel and I give you all the glory.  Thank you Jesus, and  I pray you convict all the unsaved to come to the Cross.  I love my Lord, and I love America, where my Revolutionary ancestor served as Major with his 4 sons.  Thank you Jesus.  Please all who read be blessed and use restraint and wisdom.

In other words, I WANT AMERICA BACK IN UNITY…LOVE…PATRIOTISM, as we are all equal, under the blood of our Creator who made us in HIS image. God help us, do not desert us, answer our prayers. End the hate!

Postscript:  Add another group. The American Communist Party as those arrested in Charlotsville VA were a part of. Who also is involved with Black lives Matter.  Soros you did your job well.  Such evil.

The Forgotten History of Britain’s White Slaves in America

I came across this article that appeared in Freedom Outpost by Janet Levy.  I wonder how many of you knew about this?  There is so much racism out there by the left wing media and politicians, that I thought it important to repost, because in fact they were NOT the first slaves, Whites were!

JANET LEVY — JULY 31, 2017

“Slavery in America, typically associated with blacks from Africa, was an enterprise that began with the shipping of more than 300,000 white Britons to the colonies. This little-known history is fascinatingly recounted in White Cargo (New York University Press, 2007). Drawing on letters, diaries, ship manifests, court documents, and government archives, authors Don Jordan and Michael Walsh detail how thousands of whites endured the hardships of tobacco farming and lived and died in bondage in the New World.

Following the cultivation in 1613 of an acceptable tobacco crop in Virginia, the need for labor accelerated. Slavery was viewed as the cheapest and most expedient way of providing the necessary work force. Due to harsh working conditions, beatings, starvation, and disease, survival rates for slaves rarely exceeded two years. Thus, the high level of demand was sustained by a continuous flow of white slaves from England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1618 to 1775, who were imported to serve America’s colonial masters.

These white slaves in the New World consisted of street children plucked from London’s back alleys, prostitutes, and impoverished migrants searching for a brighter future and willing to sign up for indentured servitude. Convicts were also persuaded to avoid long sentences and executions on their home soil by enslavement in the British colonies. The much maligned Irish, viewed as savages worthy of ethnic cleansing and despised for their rejection of Protestantism, also made up a portion of America’s first slave population, as did Quakers, Cavaliers, Puritans, Jesuits, and others.

Around 1618 at the start of their colonial slave trade, the English began by seizing and shipping to Virginia impoverished children, even toddlers, from London slums. Some impoverished parents sought a better life for their offspring and agreed to send them, but most often, the children were sent despite their own protests and those of their families. At the time, the London authorities represented their actions as an act of charity, a chance for a poor youth to apprentice in America, learn a trade, and avoid starvation at home. Tragically, once these unfortunate youngsters arrived, 50% of them were dead within a year after being sold to farmers to work the fields.

A few months after the first shipment of children, the first African slaves were shipped to Virginia. Interestingly, no American market existed for African slaves until late in the 17th century. Until then, black slave traders typically took their cargo to Bermuda. England’s poor were the colonies’ preferred source of slave labor, even though Europeans were more likely than Africans to die an early death in the fields. Slave owners had a greater interest in keeping African slaves alive because they represented a more significant investment. Black slaves received better treatment than Europeans on plantations, as they were viewed as valuable, lifelong property rather than indentured servants with a specific term of service.

These indentured servants represented the next wave of laborers. They were promised land after a period of servitude, but most worked unpaid for up to15 years with few ever owning any land. Mortality rates were high. Of the 1,200 who arrived in 1619, more than two thirds perished in the first year from disease, working to death, or Indian raid killings. In Maryland, out of 5,000 indentured servants who entered the colony between 1670 and 1680, 1,250 died in bondage, 1,300 gained their right to freedom, and only 241 ever became landowners.

Early in the 17th century, the headright system, a land allocation program to attract new colonists, began in Jamestown, Virginia as an attempt to solve labor shortages. The program provided acreage to heads of households that funded travel to the colony for destitute individuals to work the land. It led to the sharp growth of indentured servitude and slavery because the more slaves imported by a colonist, the larger the tracts of land received. Promises of prosperity and land were used to lure the poor, who were typically enslaved for three to 15 years. All the while, agents profited handsomely by augmenting their land holdings. Corruption was rampant in the headright system and included double-counting of individual slaves, land allocations for servants who were dead upon arrival, and per head fees given for those kidnapped off English streets.

Purveyors of slaves often worked in teams of spirits, captains, and office-keepers to kidnap people from English ports for sale in the American labor market. Spirits lured or kidnapped potential servants and arranged for their transport with ship captains. Office-keepers maintained a base to run the operation. They would entertain their prey and get them to sign papers until an awaiting ship became available. Spirits and their accomplices were occasionally put on trial, but court records show that they got off easily and that the practice was tolerated because it was so profitable.

The indentured servant system of people who voluntarily mortgaged their freedom evolved into slavery. England essentially dumped its unwanted in the American colonies, where they were treated no better than livestock. Servants were regularly battered, whipped, and humiliated. Disease was rampant, food was in short supply, and working and living conditions were grim. War with local native Indian tribes was common. Severe punishment made escape unrealistic. Initially, running away was considered a capital crime, with clemency granted in exchange for an agreement to increase the period of servitude.

In the 1640s, the transportation of the Irish began. Britain’s goal was to obliterate Ireland’s Catholics to make room for English planters. Catholics who refused to attend a Protestant church could be fined. If they were unable to pay, they could be sold as slaves. Following the end of the English Civil Wars in 1651, English military and political leader Oliver Cromwell focused his attention on Ireland, where the people had allied with the defeated royalists during the conflict. Famine was created by the intentional destruction of food stocks. Those implicated in the rebellion had their land confiscated and were sold into slavery. Anyone refusing to relocate was threatened with death, including children.

Scots were also subjected to transportation to the British colonies for religious differences, as England imposed Anglican disciplines on the Church of Scotland as well. The English army was deployed to break up illegal church assemblies and imprison or deport religious protesters.

Cruelty to servants was rampant. Beatings were common, and the perpetrators, buttressed by juries made up of fellow landowners, were rarely punished for abuse or even murder. In time, efforts were made to improve the lot of servants. Legislation in 1662 provided for a “competent diet, clothing and lodging” and disciplinary measures not to “exceed the bounds of moderation.” Servants were granted the right to complain, but the cruelty continued.

Infanticide by unmarried women was common, as they could be severely punished for “fornication.” The mother faced a whipping, fines, and extra years added to her servitude. Her offspring faced time in bondage as well. If the mother was the victim of a rape by the master, he faced a fine and the loss of a servant but wasn’t subjected to whipping.

Several uprisings in the American colonies awakened slave owners to problems, exposing their vulnerability within the caste-like master-servant social system they had created. In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon, an aristocrat from England who became a Virginia colonist, instigated an insurrection, referred to as Bacon’s Rebellion, that changed the course of white slavery.

Prior to Bacon’s Rebellion, much discontentment existed among servants over seemingly empty promises of land following their periods of indenture. When they were finally freed of their obligations, many found that they couldn’t afford the required land surveying fees and the exorbitant poll taxes.

In 1675, when war broke out with some of the native tribes, Bacon joined the side of the warring settlers and offered freedom to every slave and servant who deserted his master and joined Bacon in battle. Hundreds enthusiastically joined him in the insurgency. When Bacon died suddenly, his supporters fled or surrendered; some were recaptured, put in chains, and beaten or hanged. However, because of the revolt, whites gained rights. Whippings were forbidden without a formal judicial order.

By the early 1770s, the convict trade was big business, more profitable than the black slave trade because criminals were cheap. They could be sold for one third the price of indentured servants. England’s jails were being emptied into America on a significant scale. Additionally, merchants who traded in convicts from England and Ireland received a subsidy for every miscreant transported to America. Up to a third of incoming convicts died from dysentery, smallpox, typhoid, and freezing temperatures. Upon arrival, they were advertised for sale, inspected, and taken away in chains by new masters.

Following the Revolutionary War, the British continued to ship convict labor as “indentured servants” to America. During that time, seven ships filled with prisoners made the journey, and two successfully landed. In 1789, convict importation was legally banned across the U.S. America would no longer be the dumping ground for British criminals. It took another 30 years before the indentured servant trade ended completely.

A well written and well researched historical narrative, White Cargo, does an excellent job of elucidating a forgotten part of our colonial past by telling the story of thousands of Britons who lived and died in bondage before African slaves were transported to the New World. ” end
